Calling would be easyBota Bean Masculina Classic 8" LL Bean"iconic" and also accurate, but Bean Boot does something different. He transcends this categorization into the "symbolic".
Essymbolicof fall in New England, from thick wool sweaters to flannel shirts to jeans. It's a symbol of an imaginary American integrity, tracing a tightrope-soled footprint path back in time, through the hunters and outdoorsmen who originally wore these boots around the turn of the century, to their intersection with preppy culture somewhere in the late 1950s then his brief Instagram rose to viral popularity around 2011 and now it's our turn.
It is also a symbol of the brand that made them. The Bean Boot is representative of LL Bean, as anyone who has seen their marketing or the Beanmobile can attest. The boot also has that essential Maineness quality, the state in which it was invented and is still made.
Now that a motley spate of posts from sorority girls using Bean Boot has subsided, is it safe to use them again? Yes, and it always has been; as long as it's the classics.
Well, as recognizable as these boots are, there are many misconceptions about them. I have several pairs of these boots.I bought my oldest pair around 1992 and they are still going strong. So I'm the perfect person to debunk some myths, share some secrets and show you these cool and totally original boots.

The Story of the Bean Boot
The story goes that in 1911 Leon Leonwood Bean wanted hunting shoes that would keep his feet warm in the Maine rain forests. Back then, hunting boots leaked and became stiff and hard as they dried. Totally disgusting.
He took some size 7 1/2 galoshes and had a shoemaker sew a boot on them, and the boot was born.
Later iterations resulted in the Maine Hunting Shoe. Of the first 100 sold, 90 were returned and he replaced them all. From this act, a retail legend was born: LL Bean is still known for its generous return policy.
In 1917, Bean Boot as we know it was formed after securing a more solid injection of capital from the US Rubber Company. Although it has morphed into hundreds of variations, the basic design has changed very little, and both theMaine hunting shoeand Bean Boot are still available today.
Around 2016, after these boots went viral on social media, production peaked at nearly a million pairs and then plummeted as the trend waned. However, as anyone who has been out in the rain during the cold months can tell you, they are still a very popular boot.

How to style LL Bean Boots
Bean Boot is divisive. A lot of people will tell you how ugly they are and how much they love their bulging rubber pants and spitting lace top. They are their own thing and category. Everything you can find out there is a derivative.
If you see her as a silly, fluffy mess of rubber and leather, then I dare you to see her differently, romantically.
These boots have a legacy of afternoons by the lake, woolly sweaters and fall activities. Nothing balances a plaid shirt better than a pair of jeans, trailing down to the often tucked-in bean boots.
This is definitely a casual boot. It's almost a bootstrap task in the sense that there is onework jackets. They are boots to put on before walking the dog or to gather wood for the fire and then sit down. These are boots to wear when the ground is a combination of slush, sleet, and puddlesmelted salt. Rubber floors are not disturbed.
These boots are a formal staple, so whether you're wearing Norwegian sweaters, flannel shirts, down vests,Chaquetas Barbour, barn coats, chinos or jeans, they go incredibly well with all Boston brahmin bandages. I wear mine with everything from jeans to chinos, finished off with a flannel shirt or wool sweater and aFilson Mackinaw.
For me it's more about when I use them than with what.Since I rarely lace them up, I wear them when I want to run fast and want a shoe that's easy to put on. I also use them when there's salt, sleet, mud, water and anything else that might ruin a couplered wings. I wear them ironically when I'm feeling sane while my family, in all their Wes Anderson finery, enjoys some quintessential New England activities.
There's a certain clumsiness to these boots, and I'm happy to put up with that. They are hygge on the go; mobile comfort and deserve a place in every wardrobe.
Can you walk in bean boots?
Why risk damaging a pair of heritage boots with that salt stain running down the pipingbean bootsare impenetrable? That's why everyone needs a pair. They handle salt like no other boot; Just rinse them out in a puddle.
These are boots for leisurely walks in the woods, but not too demanding. You don't want to put up with too much loose or uneven ground. They keep ticks away but are very uncomfortable to step on.
I love using them on easy hikes through the woods near my house, through soft meadows, soft patches of dry pine needles and muddy trails. There is a creek I can step into in the shallows, but not above the triple stitching of my boots. I love the feel of the soles on the ground, giving back some of the micro-topography. I think they are not suitable for more demanding terrain.
The charm of bean boots is that they're outdated technology, like camping in a canvas tent. It has a certain nostalgic appeal, but there was a reason why technology and innovation advanced.
How LL Bean boots are made
Full-grain cowhide hides specially tanned for water resistance arrive at the 130,000-square-foot facility in Brunswick, Maine. Cutters work strategically around the imperfections of the leather, then the "clicker cutter" stamps the shape.
A divider then smooths each piece and bevels the edges. These parts are then sewn together in seven different sewing steps. An eyelet machine drills brass eyelets into the leather upper.
The soles of the shoes are made from thermoplastic rubber at Bean's Lewiston, Maine factory for greater resistance to tearing and leakage. They start out as rubber granules that are melted down and injected into the mold for the soles. The LL Bean logo is applied separately on the back of the heel.
Rubber putty and double-sided tape secure the top to the bottom before glue permanently secures with three rows of waxed cotton thread. There is also an integrated insole to reduce sweat. A steel shank provides extra torsional rigidity and an insole for comfort. Around 1,500 pairs are made every day.
Bean Boot Size and Comfort: This is how the LL Bean Boots fit
- large; Order 1.5 sizes smaller
- Narrow, medium and wide widths available
These boots fit strangely. They're big, and most of us who've worn them for years make up the difference by using socks strategically.
I suggest if you can get to one of their retail outlets, go in and check it out.I pretty reliably use a 10 width with most brands and buy in a 9 width and have had great results with a thicker sock.
If you don't live near any of their shops I suggest you follow the directions.
An LL Bean recommendation:
For light or medium socks: order whole sizes, one size smaller. Order half sizes, 1½ sizes smaller. Example: 9 or 9½, order size 8.
Ignore his advice at your peril, but first decide how you want to wear these boots. Will these be your cold-weather boots for running errands around town? Then you might want to opt for thicker socks to insulate yourself better. The only thing these boots aren't hot;Rubber soles and supple leather don't equal a warm boot unless you choose toone of your isolated options.
I've always been suspicious of people who wear thin socks with their bean boots. It's not a nice combination. These boots are thin enough that you'll want more cushioning and insulation.
The thing about the fit of these boots is thatYou don't want your feet swimming in it.As they are they have very little vertical stiffness. So if they're too big, you could sprain your ankle. You just want to leave enough room for a nice thick sock to fill the gap and provide extra warmth.
Also, I wouldn't exactly call them comfortable. They're comfortable in the sense that you don't have to worry about something touching them and ruining them. The upper grips your shins tight enough, especially when you actually buckle them up. Funds are more expansionary and have a lot of flexibility. They remind me of the snow boots my mom made me wear to elementary school. Like these,These boots have a generic sizing feelit doesn't matter how accurately you measure them.
Oddly enough, that's all part of its charm, but it's best to know what to expect.

LL Bean Boot Materials
The thermoplastic rubber footbed is of a very high quality and none of my shoes have dried out, cracked or leaked, including the 30 year old pair.
They also dress very well.I still have my original funds after 30 years. If your world is mostly paved, they will wear and eventually wear out. However, $40 and a month's stay at LL Bean will restore them to like-new condition.
The leather upper is carefully selected to avoid discoloration from stains. The seams are all solid and well placed. I've never seen any loose spots or lines that haven't been trimmed. I've seen some imperfections between the upper and the gumboot, but as long as there isn't any significant play, I think some variation is to be expected with a handcrafted boot.
These are great boots that are very reasonably priced considering they are made in the USA.

Are LL Bean boots waterproof?
These boots are impenetrable down to the rubber sole line. Plus, they're just as water-resistant as a formal watch: sure, it can withstand 100 feet of pressure, but do you really want to swim in it? The answer is no. Not you.
Likewise theBotabohne LLIt's not a waterproof boot. It's waterproof for puddles and flat snow, but only up to the triple stitching that secures the rubber bootie to the upper.
Up until the '90s, these boots came with sno-seal style ketchup packets to further increase their weather resistance. Now the leather itself is tanned to make it more waterproof. However, leather is not an impenetrable barrier. These aren't galoshes. If you realize this and keep the water below the triple suture line, you're fine.
The rope sole pattern is an interesting option for traction and works well on regular surfaces. In the snow, there can sometimes be bumps in the pattern, making them slippery. Clamps are sold separately for a reason.

If you are near an LL Bean outlet (locationsHere) these boots come in a variety of styles and colors for two-thirds the original price. This was true even when there were long waiting lists to order them on the main LL Bean website.
Unless you live near one of their stores I would take advantage of their easy return policy. Gone are the days when you could return an LL Bean product after many years if you weren't impressed. This is because a wave of people monetized the returns policy by selling LL Bean items off eBay and thrift stores and demanding cash payments. You now have a generous 1 year return policy. You can try them on at home and return them if your foot swims in them.
